Sandburg Softball Drops Pair of Close Contests With Sauk Valley

The Carl Sandburg College softball team wrapped up its regular season with a pair of tight losses to Sauk Valley on Friday, falling 2-0 and 4-2 at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex. The Chargers finished their regular season with a 16-30 overall record and 11-9 mark in the Arrowhead Conference.

Key Moments

  • Sauk Valley scored the game’s lone runs with a two-out rally in the second, using three straight singles and a pair of Chargers errors.
  • Sandburg’s best scoring chance came in the sixth when Haley Stevenson (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) singled and Katie Droste (Biggsville, Ill./West Central) was hit by a pitch to begin the inning. After a popup, they moved to second and third on a fielder’s choice, but Madison Benge (Stronghurst, Ill./West Central) flied to right to end the threat.

Freshman pitcher Kylie Stineman (New Boston, Ill./Mercer County) turned in yet another strong outing for the Chargers, allowing one earned run on seven hits and a walk while fanning four over seven innings.

Key Moments

  • The Chargers held a 2-0 lead before the Skyhawks pulled even with single tallies in the fifth and sixth. Sauk Valley then grabbed the lead in the seventh on a pair of two-out RBI doubles to finish off the sweep.
  • Sandburg had a chance to add to its lead in the fifth when Lizzie Malcolm (Milan, Ill./Alleman) led off with a double and Stevenson pushed her to third with a single, but a strikeout and two pop-ups ended the inning.

Sandburg Star of the Game
Whitney Wynkoop (Fulton, Ill./Fulton) had two of the Chargers’ six hits and knocked in their only two runs of the game with a two-run, two-out single. 

Up Next
The Chargers will play in the quarterfinals of the Region IV tournament at 1 p.m. Wednesday in a best-of-three series. The opponent and location will be determined this weekend. The Region IV semifinals and finals will take place May 5-6 in Freeport.
